The Satin Mohair Protection System

Yes, I just made up that name.  ๐Ÿ˜„

In one of my reborn Facebook groups, someone mentioned they were making satin pillows to protect the mohair. Not sure why I had not thought of this, as my hair Is naturally very curly, and when I don’t blow dry it straight, I sleep on a satin pillowcase to avoid friction and frizz.

Daily Mohair Protection

I found some newborn size satin lined beanie hats on Etsy. The newborn size will work for all of my babies. You can get them here from an Etsy shop called Simply2Cute4Kids. You may be able to find a similar item elsewhere, but I like supporting small businesses when I can, and I was able to get mine in white outside and white satin lining inside the hat.

I will also use the satin lined hats when I hold my babies (bald, painted hair and rooted hair babies). Same reasoning, as they do come in contact with my arms and clothes. These hats will prevent friction from that too. Of course, when out in public, and I want them seen and shared as therapy babies, I won’t have their hats on.

Mohair Protection For Clothing Changes

Next, I got my satin lined shower cap and did an experiment with Archie. First, I fixed his hair. Then I put the shower cap over his head (satin side over his hair) and removed his Onesie, while I held down the shower cap. Took the cap off and his hair was still perfectly fixed! (see images below on how that works). Going forward, I will use the shower cap method when I change all of my babies, because this will also prevent any friction on the vinyl/painted hair babies too. ๐Ÿ˜

Mohair Protection While They Sleep

I ordered two extra long body pillows with extra long white satin pillowcases that will go in the cribs and all babies will sleep on that. I also ordered two toddler size satin nap pillows for the two bassinets. You can get these on Amazon.

If you don’t want to use the satin pillows, you could simply use, the satin lined hats, or even satin lined shower caps.

Protecting the Rest of the Body

I always keep a regular onesie on all of my babies, as it protects the diaper and cloth body from getting dirty and any pulling/wear on the diaper too. So I bought a long sleeve, long pant onesie, called “rabbit skins” to protect the vinyl and body too, from friction that causes shine from clothing changes. While it’s easy enough to ‘m re-matte/varnish the vinyl; preventing it is even better. Of course, when wearing short sleeves, shorts or dresses, this won’t work, but it will under sleepers, pants and long sleeve clothing. I bought mine from a company called Jiffy Shirts. You may be able to find something similar elsewhere, but this place had all the sizes I needed, and different colors too. I just bought white.

Now you can hold, change and interact with your reborn babies, and help protect them too. ๐Ÿ™‚
